David Frees Appointed as Director of Saguache Emergency Management

Saguache County is pleased to announce the appointment of David Frees as the Director of Saguache Emergency Management. With an extensive background in emergency response and a commitment to community safety, David Frees accepted the  Director position in May, 2024.

David Frees brings over a decade of experience to his new position, joining the Office of Emergency Management in July 2020. A distinguished alumnus of Regis University of Denver, David graduated cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in Biology/Chemistry. He furthered his academic pursuits at Arizona State University, earning a Master of Science in Zoology specializing in Lake and Stream Ecology.

Throughout his career, David has garnered recognition for his outstanding contributions to emergency management. In 2022, he was honored with the "Emergency Manager of the Year Award" for the San Luis Valley All-Hazards Region by the Colorado Emergency Management Association (CEMA). His dedication to service was further acknowledged in 2021 when he received the prestigious "Mike Gelski Award for Outstanding Volunteer Achievement" from CEMA.

Beyond his professional accolades, David Frees is deeply involved in local emergency response initiatives. He has served as Captain and Department Training Officer for the Villa Grove/Bonanza Volunteer Fire Department since 2009, demonstrating exemplary leadership in fire safety and rescue operations. Additionally, David has been an integral Saguache County Search and Rescue Team member since 2015, contributing his expertise as a Team Leader and Technical Rope Rescue Technician.

Complementing his roles in fire and rescue, David Frees has been an essential asset to the Northern Saguache County Ambulance District since 2016, serving as an Emergency Medical Technician. His commitment to emergency medical care ensures that community members receive prompt and compassionate assistance during times of crisis.

Outside of his professional endeavors, David finds solace in tending to the land at Thirsty Peak Ranch, reflecting his dedication to environmental stewardship and rural life.
